How to Measure Your Space to Redecorate – Measuring is not an art it is pure science. Meaning, as long as you follow the basic rules, anybody can measure any room perfectly. You don’t need some degree or certificate all you need is a measuring tape, preferably 25 feet and a little know-how.

How to Measure Your Space to Redecorate

There are some basic steps to take in order to measure a room accurately and with little frustration. These steps will ensure that your measurements will provide you with perfect knowledge of the space you have.

  1. Draw a rough sketch of the room. This will include walls, windows, and doorways. Don’t worry about this being perfect yet, this sketch is just for you to write down the measurements on.
  2. Measure the longest wall from corner to corner. Make sure you measure down at the baseboard because the baseboard takes up space, thus giving you less room if you measure up high. I also start with the longest wall because it’s often the hardest and feels good to have it out of the way.
  3. Measure the remaining walls and remember you must measure down at the baseboard for accuracy. Make sure you measure every wall, most rooms include four walls but in some cases, there are more so make sure you get them all.
  4. Next measure all of the windows. Make sure you measure from the edge of the frame and not the actual window. The frame is larger so you need to measure there for the best accuracy.
  5. Measure all the doorways. Again you must measure the frames just like with the windows.
  6. Measure any extra built-in features you have, i.e., columns, fireplaces, shelves, etc.
  7. Measure and mark where controls and lighting is. For example, all outlets, light switches, and lighting features should be measured and marked here.
  8. Last but not least measure the height of the room, from floor to ceiling. If you have vaulted ceilings then you only need to measure right against the wall, since that is most likely where the furniture will be.
